inSingapore: tree-t or trick?

Public housing is truly one of the things Singapore can be proud of.

Improvements and additions, such as playgrounds, exercise areas, corners for the aged to get together, have all been added in the areas near my home over the past couple of years.

The latest improvement is the walkway pictured below.

Wow, great idea! I could do with the shelter while crossing the road. Even better, they saved the full-grown trees by cutting holes in the roof of the walkway, as you can see here:

I’d give them full marks except for the fact that I can’t understand why they didn’t just build a walkway straight across the road, at a point where they avoid any trees altogether. Guess that would be TOO simple (the trick-ier the solution, the better, it seems!).
