Singapore Idol: Syltra Lee Out, Lucked Out!
So Syltra Lee was the one eliminated this week, victim of a phone voting system that seems to be eliminating some of the more talented singers. But, in Syltra’s case, I think she got lucky.
I saw her in the Top 24 show, and she exuded genuineness, style, attitude and personality. Fast forward to this week, and whoa, she’s been made over into this muppet of a pop star. The overdone lashes and those lips… that’s not make-up, that’s caricature. And she was being encouraged to change even further, to appeal to the masses! Syltra was probably fortunate to get out before they ironed all the personality out of her.
Makeovers are great when they serve to enhance or highlight the essence of who a person is. However, to encourage people to transform into something they’re not, that’s just wrong, cruel even. Ken advising Fathin to turn into Lady Gaga? Ridiculous! She doesn’t come across as someone with a natural flamboyance and love of dramatics. That makeover would be a disaster. Fathin has the vocal chops, let her shine with her voice alone.

I agree. The judges and voters should judge/vote based on talent first and foremost. Appearances will just come after. Syltra shouldn’t have been eliminated.

Actually, I find Syltra to be a very attractive girl, though her beauty is more of the edgy model variety (think America’s Next Top Model) than the pop-star pretty-sexy the judges seem to favour.

Im shocked when syltra out..this voting system will never find a talented singer in SI.

That holds for the Idol franchise in general, I think. It’s true that image is just as important as singing when it comes to motivating people to vote (and, in singapore, spending money to do so). And the judges are not helping by their comments which seem to focus a lot on looks, clothes, image — they are giving all the wrong cues to the voters.

I think the 3 Judges are not so talented at picking someone who’s got the X-factor to be our next SI
I dont think there is a Talent who is deserving the title of SI for season 3.

My thoughts on that is that they’re focusing too much on trying to find someone with the X-factor. I’d just as soon watch a show where you have people who can sing, and who can communicate their passion for singing — that’s what would make the show interesting to me.
